Registrar appointments form part of the Groote Schuur Hospital training ecosystem and may include rotations across Metro West and Rural East hospitals, including Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Mitchells Plain District Hospital, Victoria Hospital, George Provincial Hospital and other affiliated institutions.
Job Purpose
The Registrar: Anaesthetics will provide safe, effective, and evidence-based anaesthetic and perioperative care while undergoing specialist training in Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care Medicine. The post offers structured clinical training, academic development, and research exposure in accordance with the University of Cape Town (UCT) postgraduate training requirements.
Requirements
Minimum Educational Qualification:
An appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.
Professional Registration:
Current registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
Inherent Requirements of the Job:

Compulsory participation in commuted overtime

Emergency and after-hours call coverage

Each Registrar will be appointed to a specific training complex but may be required to work across the platform as operational needs dictate
Competencies (Knowledge, Skills and Experience)
-
Successful completion of FCA Part 1
-
Other appropriate postgraduate medical diploma, certificate, or degree
-
Current ATLS and/or ACLS certification
-
Experience in Internal Medicine or Critical Care, under specialist supervision
-
Appropriate and sufficient clinical experience since obtaining the MBChB degree and after completion of internal rotations
-
Experience in Anaesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine
-
Diploma in Anaesthesia (DA)
-
Sound knowledge and practical skills in safe general and regional anaesthesia
-
Knowledge and appropriate use of anaesthetic equipment
-
Effective leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
Key Duties and Responsibilities
-
Provide safe anaesthetic care to patients across a wide range of surgical disciplines
-
Perform pre-operative assessments and advise surgeons on patient work-up and optimisation
-
Manage post-operative analgesia and recovery of patients from anaesthesia
-
Participate in Intensive Care Therapy and perioperative critical care management
-
Develop competence in the art and science of anaesthesia practice and ICU medicine
-
Acquire critical clinical skills required of a specialist anaesthetist
-
Attend academic tutorials, teaching sessions, and departmental meetings
-
Assist with the training and supervision of interns, medical students, nursing staff and paramedics
-
Participate in theatre and ICU supervision, including after-hours management of theatre lists and staff
-
Contribute to research, audits, and quality improvement initiatives related to anaesthesia, intensive care and pain management
