PURPOSE OF THE POST

The Department invites applications from suitably qualified and motivated candidates for appointment to the position of Cleaner: Facilities Management – Cleaning Services. The successful candidates will be responsible for providing effective and efficient cleaning services to ensure that all offices, court buildings, and related facilities are maintained in a clean, safe, hygienic, and presentable condition.

This position contributes directly to the health, safety, and well-being of employees, court officials, service providers, and members of the public who access departmental facilities on a daily basis.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Junior Certificate (Grade 8), ABET Level 4 or an equivalent qualification.

  • No previous experience required.

  • Basic communication and literacy skills.

  • Good interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to perform routine and repetitive cleaning tasks.

  • Knowledge of the correct use of cleaning materials, chemicals, and equipment will be an added advantage.

  • Ability to work physically for long hours.

  • Willingness to work in environments exposed to cleaning chemicals and potentially hazardous conditions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Basic understanding of cleaning procedures and hygiene standards.

  • Ability to follow instructions and adhere to cleaning schedules.

  • Physical fitness to perform manual work.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • Attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.

  • Good time management and reliability.

  • Awareness of basic occupational health and safety practices.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidates will be responsible for performing the following duties, among others:

Cleaning of Buildings and Offices

  • Clean offices, courtrooms, open spaces, and public areas.

  • Sweep passages, offices, floors, pavements, and basement areas.

  • Empty dustbins and dispose of waste in accordance with procedures.

  • Dust and polish wooden tables, desks, shelves, and other furniture.

  • Clean windows, doors, walls, and other surfaces.

  • Scrub, mop, and polish floors and vacuum carpets as required.

  • Refill water bottles with fresh drinking water where applicable.

Cleaning of Ablution Facilities

  • Perform deep cleaning of toilets and ablution facilities.

  • Wash basins, walls, floors, and toilet surfaces.

  • Refill toilet paper dispensers, hand soap, and related consumables.

  • Ensure toilets remain hygienic and presentable throughout the day.

Cleaning of Kitchens and Meeting Areas

  • Clean kitchens, including floors, surfaces, and appliances.

  • Wash dishes during forums, meetings, and official events.

  • Assist with preparation and serving of tea and coffee during meetings where required.

Safety and General Assistance

  • Report any defects, damages, or maintenance issues identified during cleaning.

  • Alert staff and visitors of slippery floors or unsafe conditions.

  • Inform supervisors of faulty lights, broken locks, or other safety concerns.

  • Contribute to maintaining a safe working environment within departmental buildings.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • The position requires physical work, including standing, bending, lifting, and walking for extended periods.

  • Exposure to cleaning chemicals and hazardous working conditions may occur.

  • Cleaners may be required to work in different areas within the assigned facility.

  • Strict adherence to health, safety, and hygiene standards is required at all times.
