Job Purpose
The successful candidate will provide professional South African Sign Language (SASL) interpreting services to Deaf employees and clients, ensuring effective communication in various departmental and community settings. The role involves interpreting during meetings, trainings, workshops, conferences, and community events, as well as providing guidance and awareness on SASL interpretation within the department. The post requires a strong understanding of Deaf culture, exceptional linguistic ability, and the ability to work independently under pressure.
Requirements
Educational Qualifications:

Grade 12 (Matric)
-
National Diploma in South African Sign Language Interpreting as recognized by SAQA
-
Certificate in SASL Interpreting – Level 2 of Interpreting
Professional Registration / Membership:
-
Appropriate linguistic qualification allowing registration with the South African Translators Institute (SATI)
Experience:
-
Minimum of two (2) years relevant experience in interpretation services
Competencies / Knowledge and Skills:
-
Extensive knowledge of South African Sign Language interpretation theory (SASL)

In-depth understanding of Deaf culture and issues affecting the Deaf community
-
Ability to understand and communicate in English and any other dominant provincial language (e.g., Setswana)

Highly proficient in accurately interpreting spoken and signed messages in SASL, ensuring fidelity without additions, omissions, or alterations
-
Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
-
Ability to work independently and under pressure, with excellent time management and organisational skills

Computer literacy in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint

Basic administrative and record-keeping skills

Willingness to work irregular hours as required by the department
Key Duties and Responsibilities
-
Provide SASL interpreting services to Deaf employees and clients during departmental activities, including:
-
Meetings, workshops, trainings, conferences and community events
-
Telephone interpreting for departmental communications
-
Consultation services organized by social workers at district or service points
-

Support and provide interpreting services to the Deaf community during departmental programs, including signing Service Level Agreements and participating in monitoring meetings

Facilitate awareness and understanding of SASL interpreting within the department
-
Advise departmental staff on the interpretation process and best practices for using SASL services

Assist in creating awareness of proper SASL interpreting services for both staff and clients

Perform administrative and reporting duties for the Special Needs Directorate
