Salary: R163 680 – R192 810 per annum

 JOB OVERVIEW

The Food Service Aid position plays an important support role within the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development by ensuring the effective provision of catering and hospitality services at official meetings, workshops and departmental events. The successful candidates will be responsible for maintaining a clean, safe and well-organized food service environment, while delivering a professional and courteous service to officials, stakeholders and visitors.

This position requires individuals who are reliable, detail-oriented and able to work effectively under pressure. The role demands a high standard of hygiene, teamwork and customer service, as well as the ability to follow instructions and adhere to departmental policies and safety standards. Food Service Aids contribute directly to the smooth running of daily operations by supporting staff and management during official functions and meetings.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidates will be responsible for providing catering support services within their assigned offices. This includes preparing and serving food and beverages during meetings, conferences, workshops, and official events. The incumbents will ensure that refreshments are served in a timely, professional, and presentable manner, in accordance with departmental standards.

A key responsibility of the role is maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in food preparation and service areas. This includes cleaning kitchen utensils, equipment, crockery and cutlery after use, as well as ensuring that all food service areas are kept neat, orderly and compliant with health and safety requirements. The Food Service Aid will also be responsible for preparing conference facilities by setting up tables, arranging cutlery and crockery and ensuring that meeting venues are clean and ready for use.

The incumbents will monitor food supplies, report shortages and assist in controlling waste and losses. This includes keeping track of stock levels, notifying supervisors of items that need replenishment and ensuring that food and beverages are handled and stored correctly to avoid spoilage or unnecessary waste.

In addition, the successful candidates will be expected to interact professionally with colleagues, visitors and stakeholders, demonstrating good customer service and interpersonal skills at all times. The role requires the ability to manage time effectively, follow schedules and respond to requests promptly, even in a high-pressure environment.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have a minimum qualification of ABET Level 4 or Grade 10. No formal tertiary qualification is required; however, relevant experience in catering, hospitality or support services will be an advantage.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

The successful candidates must demonstrate basic verbal and written communication skills to effectively receive instructions and interact with colleagues and stakeholders. Strong planning and organizing skills are required to manage multiple tasks efficiently, particularly during busy periods such as meetings or events.

Key competencies include a customer service orientation, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills. The incumbents must be able to work under pressure, manage conflict appropriately and maintain professionalism at all times. Reliability, punctuality and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are essential attributes for this role.
